Both versions exist across Chinese postpartum tradition. The clear tea is the everyday pick-up drink; the milk-paste version is closer to the sweet evening tonic many mothers were given as children. In TCM walnuts are linked to kidney support and goji to liver and eyes.

Walnuts (raw, shelled) 核桃
raw, lightly toasted in a dry pan 2 min
1 tbsp
Goji berries 枸杞子
3 dates
Red dates (jujube) 红枣
pitted
1 tsp, to taste
Rock sugar 冰糖
200ml
Fresh milk (or oat milk) 鲜奶
for the milk version; optional

Toast the walnuts in a dry pan 2 minutes until fragrant. Cool briefly.

Choose your version:

Tea version: combine walnuts (left whole or crushed), goji, dates, and 350ml water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, simmer 10 minutes. Stir in rock sugar. Strain into a mug.

Milk-paste version: blend the toasted walnuts with 100ml warm water until smooth. Bring 200ml milk (dairy or oat) to a gentle simmer, whisk in the walnut paste and rock sugar, and add the goji and dates in the last 3 minutes. Drink warm.

Both keep one day refrigerated; reheat gently.
