First-week tradition
Po Po sayswhy we make this
“The first-week drink in Chinese postpartum tradition. Many families use it; many TCM doctors now say it is optional after a hospital birth. Skip it if you would rather.”

1 sachet a day
Sheng Hua Tang herbal pack 生化汤
sachets differ between shops; follow the packet, and if unsure ask the shop or a TCM practitioner
Method · 做法
1
Start only once you are home and no longer taking the womb-contracting medicine the hospital may have given you (oxytocin, ergometrine, misoprostol). After a C-section, also only after your wound has been checked. If unsure, ask your midwife.
2
Bring 600ml of water to the boil in a clay pot or stainless saucepan.
3
Add one herbal sachet, reduce to a low simmer, cover, and cook 30 to 40 minutes until the liquid reduces to about 200ml.
4
Strain. Drink warm as two cups, morning and afternoon. That is the whole day's amount; do not brew the sachet again and never use two sachets in a day.
Herbs & safety · 安全

Optional. Natural birth: days 2 to 7, six sachets at most. C-section: days 5 to 9, five sachets at most. Never past day 10 whatever the birth type, and never with blood thinners. Do not take it if you have heavy or bright red bleeding, a fever, foul-smelling discharge, a wound infection, a clotting condition, or had any bleeding complication at the birth. If bleeding increases, stop and call your midwife.

These herbs are used as food ingredients here, not as licensed medicine. If you take prescription medication, have a clotting disorder, or have any post-birth complication, check with your clinician first.
