The standard confinement breakfast across Chinese regional traditions. Millet is warming and gentle on the stomach; red dates and goji bring colour to the bowl. Many mothers eat this every morning of the forty days.

¼ cup (50g)
Millet 小米
rinsed thoroughly
4 to 6 dates
Red dates (jujube) 红枣
pitted
1 to 2 tbsp
Goji berries 枸杞子
2 to 3 slices
Old ginger 老姜
small handful, optional
Dried longan 桂圆
1 small, cubed (optional)
Sweet potato 番薯
adds warmth and sweetness
Method · 做法

Add millet, red dates, ginger, longan, and sweet potato (if using) to a small pot or rice cooker with 500ml of water.

Stovetop: bring to a boil, reduce to a low simmer, cover, and cook for 20 to 25 minutes until creamy.

Rice cooker: cook on porridge setting (about 20 minutes).

Stir in the goji in the final 5 minutes. Serve warm.
