The seven-ingredient postpartum porridge. Each ingredient carries its own meaning in Chinese tradition: millet warms, black rice and adzuki support blood, peanuts add healthy fats, dates and longan nourish, ginger drives out wind. Made in one big pot for the week.

Black glutinous rice 黑糯米

Red adzuki beans 红豆
2 tbsp
Raw peanuts (skin on) 花生
12 dates
Red dates (jujube) 红枣
pitted
8 pieces
Dried longan 桂圆
2 slices
Old ginger 老姜
2 tbsp
Goji berries 枸杞子
added at the end
to taste, optional
Rock sugar 冰糖
Method · 做法

Soak the millet, black rice, adzuki beans, and peanuts together for one to two hours, or overnight in the fridge.

Drain and combine in a stockpot with the dates, longan, ginger, and 1.5 to 2L of water.

Bring to a boil, then reduce to a medium-low simmer for two hours, stirring occasionally so it does not catch on the bottom.

Stir in the goji and rock sugar in the final 15 minutes.

Serve warm. Keeps three to four days refrigerated; reheat gently with a splash of water.
