One of the most prized confinement soups. Silkie chicken is considered the most yin-nourishing of all poultry in Chinese postpartum tradition. The simple red-date and ginger version is safe from day 1; the herbal version with huang qi or dang gui is reserved for week 2 onwards.

1 whole bird
Black silkie chicken 乌鸡
8 dates
Red dates (jujube) 红枣
2 tbsp
Goji berries 枸杞子
added last 5 minutes
5 slices
Old ginger 老姜
10g, optional, only from week 2
Astragalus root 黄芪
Method · 做法

Blanch the silkie whole for 3 minutes in boiling water. Drain.

Place bird in a deep pot with 2.5L water, ginger, and red dates. Add huang qi only if you are in week 2 or later.

Bring to boil, then simmer covered on low for 2 hours. The broth should turn deep black-brown.

Add goji in the last 5 minutes. Salt at the table.

Eat the broth and a little meat, save the rest for the next day's lunch.
