Po Po sayswhy we make this
“The congee form of the sesame paste, eaten as a breakfast rather than a snack. Black sesame is iron and calcium dense in the Chinese postpartum tradition; walnuts add healthy fats. A Chinese postpartum nanny will rotate this in once or twice a week to vary the morning grain.”
Ingredients · 材料
At SeeWoo · Wing Yip
60g
Glutinous rice 糯米
or short-grain rice
40g
Jasmine rice 香米
3 tbsp
Black sesame seeds 黑芝麻
toasted, lightly crushed
3 tbsp
Walnuts (raw, shelled) 核桃
toasted, roughly chopped
6 dates
Red dates (jujube) 红枣

1 to 2 tbsp, to taste
Rock sugar 冰糖
Method · 做法
1
Toast the black sesame and walnuts separately in a dry pan, 2 minutes each, until fragrant.
2
Lightly crush the sesame in a mortar (or pulse briefly in a food processor) so it releases its oils.
3
Combine the rice, dates, and 1.2L of water in a pot or rice cooker.
4
Stovetop: bring to a boil, reduce to a low simmer, cover, and cook 60 to 75 minutes until creamy. Rice cooker: porridge setting.
5
Stir in the toasted sesame, walnuts, and rock sugar in the last 10 minutes. Serve warm.
